Club Cruise to Clunes Historic Vehicle Show

Ahhh, the sweet smell of burning R30 in the morning. It was going to be another great Club day as we pulled the “almost” idling Rotor out of the shed and into the sunshine. An early start was needed this morning because someone had decided we’d all meet and leave from the Marong Hotel carpark at 9am, way way over the other side of town. I suppose my fault for not living in Marong. As usual we got every red light through Bendigo (is it just me?) and finally pulled up at the pub almost 40 minutes later.
There were 8 cars parked, so it was already going to be a much bigger turnout than the last run. As we climbed out of the Rotor, you couldn’t help but notice Wayne laying on the ground at the front of his Thunderbird. Obviously not checking the asphalt for ants or passed out drunk at this time of the morning. And he was swearing, so you could easily tell he wasn’t happy about being on the ground. The cause of Waynes frustration was the front drivers side tyre being flat on the bottom. I guess there could be a worse time to get a puncture, but this was still pretty annoying. And he was.
Luckily we like Wayne, so he had help with a hydraulic jack to get the Bird off the ground and help to remove the offending wheel and replace with the spare. In no time at all the car was lowered back to the ground and apart from some dry grass and leaves on the back of Wayne’s polo shirt, all was back to normal. Many thanks to the members that helped Wayne to change the tyre. He was very grateful for the assistance. Thanks.
By now there had been quite a lot of other members roll up and we had 15 cars ready to cruise. When the Prez pulled up in his 4wd we even thought for a moment he was coming along for his first cruise in over a year. But no, he had only called in because he thought we might have forgotten who he was….
There was some discussion about which route we should take to Clunes, with mention of “single lane” roads sending a scare through several members – including me. Anyway, with Hoota in the lead, we all pulled out of Marong and headed south. He may have led us a different way than initially discussed or perhaps I wasn't listening correctly because as it turned out there were no single lane roads – although there seemed to be excessive amounts of bumps and ditches and holes – but maybe it was only Nath and me in the Rotor that noticed any of that. I dunno. There were the normal shenanigans going on particularly with Hoota and Adrian (as expected… ), and I did notice Adam in the orange Mustang at one intersection fighting the big beast - with both hands - back from a 45 degree angle to the direction he was intending to go. Needed a third hand to pull another gear mate! Looked sensational in the mirror. He said later he doesn't do that very often. Yeah.
It was a warm and sunny day now and a little dusty as we pulled into the Clunes Showgrounds. We were directed towards the rear of the show parking area and our 15 cars pretty much filled the remaining spaces. Lucky more members didn’t come. There were around a hundred classic vehicles on display and nearly as many trucks. Trucks from the 20’s, trucks from the 30’s and trucks from every era. You’d have to love trucks, cause there were a lot of trucks. By the time we had looked at half of them, we’d had enough and were completely trucked. A couple of hotdogs and cans of coke later and it was time to hit the road for a leisurely cruise back to Bendigo. With several wrong turns thrown in for good measure, we arrived home in one piece and tucked the car away until next time.
Thanks to everyone that came along on this Club run, hope you had a great day!
