Club Cruise to Tatura Show 'n' Shine
20th October, 2019
20th October, 2019
Was in a bit of a rush this morning - by the time you prepare the Rotor, premix 40ltrs of fuel and jiggle syphon it all into the tank, then find the 'L' plates (yeah, not for me...), get the engine warm enough to idle without stalling, then get over to Huntly, it was close to the 9am departure time. After a few greetings and a few happy snaps, Wayne took the lead in his Dodge Ram, with Hoota up the rear. (I'm being serious, the Ram was up front and Hoota was coming up the rear....).
As we were leaving we all got mixed up and lost in an RV Campervan Grey Nomad Tourist bloody convoy all the way from Huntly to the Rushworth turnoff. In the 100 zone our speed varied between 60 and 80kph. Except for Darren. I could see him and the family just up ahead having a ball booting the 351 and passing van after van - although not entirely sure the family was having as much fun as he was. Darren was spending more time on the right side of the road than the left. His XC V8 was lovin' it, get rid of those cobwebs mate. It was a happy moment when all the vans followed the highway and we turned off for Rushworth.
Wayno up front in the Ram was not sparing the horses either, with the wind in our hair and the smell of premix in our noses, we pushed through the undulating green countryside through Colbinabin and into Rushworth for a wee stop. Apart from the campervan convoy, the only complaint I heard was from Cusso - who had to pull over several k's before Rushworth to check for a fuel leak as he was consuming petrol faster than a rotary. When I asked how much his fuel gauge had dropped - he said "all the way". This was the first outing for him and the family in the very recently rego'ed (like two days ago) VK SS Group A and even though it would use it's fair share of premium, probably shouldn't have sucked a full tank. Not sure if he poked a stick in the tank, shone a torch in there or what, but he continued on, hoping it was a faulty fuel sender.
We rolled into the Show as a convoy and were all directed to park together (in a bit of a shitty location - dry grass/dust/big gumtree). It was pretty cool driving in through the entry shed with the crowd parting to let us all through. We put up the Custom Addictions flags and all went walkin', talkin' an lookin'. It always surprises me how many classic car come out for these shows, there would have been 250 cars from old to new, rare to the not so rare and everything in between. Completely original through to wildly modified. As always we just expected to be the only Rotor there, but were surprised to find an original bone stock white R100, and then a little later a silver/grey very stock RX3 coupe.
Hey Deano - you would have loved the 24 Statesmans all parked together- didn't you used to have a Keith Black engine'ed green one? Yeah, thought so.
A couple of the lads decided they weren't prepared to wait in line for food, so left early and headed to the Tatura pub for a counter meal - where they waited in line to order food, and then waited for it to be served, but at least with an ice cold frothy in hand.
And so, all too soon we were cruisin' home back to Bendigo thinking of the next one.
I got a call from Club Member Trevor (light green HT Premier) a little later saying he was stopped by an official at the exit gate as he was leaving and the guy told him he shouldn't be leaving the show before the trophy presentations - as he'd won "Best Original Car of the Show". How about that, bloody good work Trev!!!!
Hanging out for the next cruise!
