Wayne's Cryptic Cruise
22nd April, 2018.
22nd April, 2018.
Another sunny day - you Events Guys know how to pick them. Wayne has had this cruise planned for some time, which became obvious when trying to look for clues and landmarks like businesses that had changed names or were no longer even there.....
However, that didn't stop 25 of us from following Wayne's cryptic instructions on a journey around Bendigo and surrounding countryside.
Once again the usual crowd of around 25 members arrived at the Clubhouse, but this time the departure was a little different. Each of us received a set of instructions showing details of what we should do and clues as to how we should do it. And then we all left separately with a time written on our sheets. Bonus points if you completed the course in the same time as Wayne's base run.
Someone mentioned to me "I hope we don't have to go past Lake Weeroona, 'cause there's cops everywhere". Apparently two cars, eight cops and the distinct possibility of being stopped for a roadworthy. I had the Rotor out today and we all know it might be borderline in the eyes of someone that has something against rotaries. As Deano said later, "just tell 'em it's a classic and that's exactly how they were back in the '80's". He'd be right of course, but some of the cops might not have seen a rotary from the 80's . Bruce in the old turbo Landcruiser had also heard of the potential problem down at the lake and was a little anxious if we were going that way. He also had another issue, he had come alone and his dog was unable to read the clues. Bruce decided to follow me. Oddly enough this was a great idea, because later in the day he commented how well the 'Cruiser was going today with all the caster oil fumes from the rotor being swallowed by his big turbo six. A win win.
It was a little odd as we all drove off at different times, not the usual impressive convoy of colour and noise, but we were looking forward to an interesting day. The clues took us around east Bendigo, then - of course - right past Lake Weeroona. I didn't think pushing my luck by driving that way was a particularly good idea, so we pretty much disqualified ourselves by taking a long way around and arriving at the Allies Pub without having filled out any of the answers on the way. And to make it worse, the Pub was still closed. We'd caught up with some others by then, so we had a little tag along group happenning. Probably disqualified for that too. And the Marong Hotel wasn't open either.
The cruise took us around Lockwood, Kangaroo Flat, back through Bendigo and then returning to the Clubhouse. By the time we got there, nearly everyone was there, the BBQ was firing and the beers flowin'. Wayne took one look at the form me and Nathan had filled out and before he could say "You're disqualifed", I said "Yes, I'm disqualified". No doubt the main committee couldn't have won anyway.
New member Keith with his family in the blue LS1 powered EH Holden won the day with the best answers and time. Not bad for his first day out with us. Congratulations mate!
So, once again, a very successful day and something just a little different. Thanks Wayne, thanks Events Guys.
